    Best Softimage Plugins Part 1

    Softimage is lacking major support of developer plugins in comparison with other software. Even VRay doesnt exist for Softimage (though its in beta for at least 2 years now). Thanks to ICE (Interactive Creative Environments) in Softimage though, we have seen some addons beign made, mostly by independent developers. The following are addons that you cant miss
    emFluid 3.01

    emFluid is but a fluid simulation solver (fire, smoke e.t.c.) created within ICE. emFluid is quite simple to setup and thanks to Softimages ICE speed the simulations are nearly realtime. The features are good and the price is great at only 79E. For Softimage there is no alternative for fluid based simulations than emFluid.

    SPHFluids

    SPH Fluids is a fluid based solver based on SPH (Smoothed-particle hydrodynamics) method, implemented in ICE by Thiago Costa. To get it you have to join this Google group.
    SPH Fluids can achieve some good results. Vimeo is full of test videos of it.

    aaOcean Suit

    aaOcean is a suite of tools to simulate and render ocean waves, implemented in ICE by Amaan Akram based on Jerrys Tessendorf paper. Very easy to use too.

    emPolygonizer 1.69

    emPolygonizer in basicly an ICE metaball operator. The good thing about it, is its support of inputs. Those being nulls, curves, polygon meshes and point clouds.

    mbFeatherTools 2.0

    This ICE addon is able to style, animate and simulate bird feathers, based on the Verlet algorithm and it is priced at 240E per license.

    SixBirds Rigging Solver

    Very good and free collection of 13 rigging solvers. Some are very original and easy to setup and will save you hours. Instead of writing whats included the video will demonstrate them better.


    Kristinka Hair Toolkit

    Kristinka is a set of ICE compounds to create hair from ICE strands. It is a bit complex but surely worth the while.
    StrandTree

    StrandTree is an ICE procedural tree generator with a handfull of features created by Fabricio Chamon. Not the most realistic tree for sure but since it is within ICE there is much space for integration and expandability.

    XSI Metaballs 3

    XSI Metaballs by ThreeSixty3D Software is what it says. A metaball creation plugin with very nice features too.
    TGen 2

    TGen 2 is a Softimage addon for creating trees and animating them. Its not ICE based like StrandTree, but that doesnt make it less valuable for sure.
    SaveRenderMesh

    It is a very handful shader by Andy Nicholas that can capture the output geometry rendered in MentalRay like displacement, hair and particles and export it in a .obj format.
    KP_PointCache Tools

    Tool to create cache object deformations to a file and reapply them. The tool is also able to interchange the caches with 3DS Max, Maya, Blender and Houdini















    Theres a lot of buzz out there about whats this tool and etc

    Assassins Creed Lineage

    Just finish working on these series of short films for Assassins Creed 2.
    The game looks amazing as well!
    This production was done at Hybride and Ubisoft Digital Arts, my work consisted of making workflows/tools and leading the Technical Directors and pipeline people during the project at UDA.
    This was quite an experience and Im happy with the results, although I wish we had more than 5 months to produce the whole thing
    In my opinion (and not because I worked on it :P) this is the first adaptation of a game to a film that makes into the form a short film and doesnt let me down. It actually leaves that feeling that we could explore more of this universe.
    I would be looking forward to work on a full feature film for this brand, with a lot of time to produce it of course

    Mesher for the SPH

    There are at least 3 different meshers for ICE particles that can be used with the SPH:
    Pwrapper from 3daliens
    emPolygonizer
    And Guillaume Laforge is doing this pretty cool project that constructs a fast scalar field in ICE and passes to the polygonizer in a grid structure.
    The coolest stuff for me is that the distance function on Guillaumes polygonizer is an ICE compound! So you can play with it right there and manage to change the way the polygonizer will weight the surface.
    Its exciting to see all these people developing these tools and they are all compatible with my SPH solver, have fun!

    Ive been working on this SPH (Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics) fluids simulator for XSIs ICE.
    I did my own collisions logic, integration, substeps, all the physics part, etc using low level ICE nodes, and now some compiled C++ nodes.
    The simulator supports pressure, density, viscosity, tension, collisions and some other stuff.

    Graphing in ICE

    Visualize the graph of a function is not easy (at least for me), without plotting the function.
    It can be really hard to understand what y = x^2 * z^2 looks like.
    So I obviously did an ICE compound with these most common graphs.
    I couldnt stop doing functions and playing with it, so I ended up with this list, all in the same compound:

    Some are very common, others are not. Its cool how many crazy patters you can get using these functions.
    Hopefully this will work as a educational resource, so you can see what these functions look when applied to a 3d shape and understand how Sin, Cos, Absolute values, etc, can affect the function.
    Here is what these equations look like when applied to a grid:

    Whats even more cool in ICE is that after I had all the functions done, I could apply this as a force, a weightmap basically anything that reads a 3d vector or a scalar.

    Microsoft Zune

    Package of 6 animations done at Nervo.tv for Zune.
    My participation on this project started on RnD, and how we would make the simulation work on the cube shape, then how to animate it. I also did most of the lighting work and the final compositing/color grading.
    Few interesting things from this project:
    The Boxes animation was done simulating rigid bodies in XSI, and a lot of layered animation on top.
    The Liquids one I had to write a little script to allow me import a sequence of meshes, that came from a standard particle simulation. To then enable people to tweak it later, in a mesh state and apply relax operations etc.
    The Sweets one was very tricky too, each frame of the animation is a different object. Like a 3d stop motion technique.
    This project was fun and challenging at the same time, Im pretty happy how it turned out.

    ICE - Particle density

    Based on the number of neighboring particles, this compound can adjust the color around the boundaries of a particle cloud.
    The range is calculated based on the number of points in the island, so a gradient is smoothly blended to the particle color.
    This can be used in any region of the stack. Plug the Execute Color in one ICEtree port and you are good to go.
    However if you want the color to update with the simulation, you must use this in the simulation region.

    Runner for Timex

    For this Timex spot done at Nervo.tv, I worked mostly in the runner, but also in some background elements.
    The runner rig/animation/cloth simulation was pretty fun, I worked with Syflex, used Refmodels to manage the versions of the runner and also developed the look of this guy in 3d.

    Like the grease pencil tool for Maya, this tool allows you to draw with the sketch tool for 2d animation/per frame annotation, directly in the XSI viewport.
    Changes V1.1


    • Assembled the XSI Bezier curve tool, CV Curve tool and Curve Text tool to be used from the TC_sketch PPG
    • Added the edit frames command, now you can move your frames in time, selecting a frame in the listbox and using the up and down buttons.
    • Added the code to work on linux system.
    • The current frame stays visible until the next frame.
    • The listbox now let you navigate/select frames to edit.
    • Default frame duration option in the setup tab was renamed to Last frame duration. So now it just affects the last frame of the animation.
    • Re worked the entire keyframing command

    Features V1.0

    • Drawing mode Auto-keyframing (selectability/visibility).
    • Curves color and Visibility/Selectability overrides.
    • Curve editing The nav slider in the Edit Frames group is useful to edit/add curves to existing frames. Change this slider will jump the XSI timeline to where the sketched curve is in time.
    • Auto-select curves option will automatically select all the curves for that given frame.
    • XSI Brush tool and View Proportional Transform Tool can be called from the TC_sketch PPG.
    • The Sketch tool creates a standard XSI curve, so you can use any XSI deformer tools on it.

    This is my sketchbook.
    Most part of the work here was done in digital (photoshop, open canvas, painter, artrage). But I also work on paper and I really like life drawing sessions.
    Ive used photographs as a reference for some images on this section.
    I will post my OC painting sessions with my friend Mario Ucci, dont forget to check out his amazing 2d portfolio.

    CMT - Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge

    Marcelo Souza helped me a lot to deliver a bunch of animations of the bull.

    H2oh! is a flavored water type of thing that called for animated fishes inside of the aquarium.
    At Conspiraão Filmes filmes I had the opportunity to work in the modeling, animation and was the lead texturer/shading artist.
    Our pipeline was based on Maya, Renderman and Photoshop.

    Softimage is lacking major support of developer plugins in comparison with other software. Even VRay doesnt exist for Softimage (though its in beta for at least 2 years now). Thanks to ICE (Interactive Creative Environments) in Softimage though, we have seen some addons beign made, mostly by independent developers. The following are addons that you cant miss
    emFluid 3.01

    emFluid is but a fluid simulation solver (fire, smoke e.t.c.) created within ICE. emFluid is quite simple to setup and thanks to Softimages ICE speed the simulations are nearly realtime. The features are good and the price is great at only 79E. For Softimage there is no alternative for fluid based simulations than emFluid.

    SPHFluids

    SPH Fluids is a fluid based solver based on SPH (Smoothed-particle hydrodynamics) method, implemented in ICE by Thiago Costa. To get it you have to join this Google group.
    SPH Fluids can achieve some good results. Vimeo is full of test videos of it.

    aaOcean Suit

    aaOcean is a suite of tools to simulate and render ocean waves, implemented in ICE by Amaan Akram based on Jerrys Tessendorf paper. Very easy to use too.

    emPolygonizer in basicly an ICE metaball operator. The good thing about it, is its support of inputs. Those being nulls, curves, polygon meshes and point clouds.

    SixBirds Rigging Solver

    Very good and free collection of 13 rigging solvers. Some are very original and easy to setup and will save you hours. Instead of writing whats included the video will demonstrate them better.


    Kristinka Hair Toolkit

    Kristinka is a set of ICE compounds to create hair from ICE strands. It is a bit complex but surely worth the while.
    StrandTree

    StrandTree is an ICE procedural tree generator with a handfull of features created by Fabricio Chamon. Not the most realistic tree for sure but since it is within ICE there is much space for integration and expandability.

    XSI Metaballs 3

    XSI Metaballs by ThreeSixty3D Software is what it says. A metaball creation plugin with very nice features too.
    TGen 2

    TGen 2 is a Softimage addon for creating trees and animating them. Its not ICE based like StrandTree, but that doesnt make it less valuable for sure.
    SaveRenderMesh

    It is a very handful shader by Andy Nicholas that can capture the output geometry rendered in MentalRay like displacement, hair and particles and export it in a .obj format.
    KP_PointCache Tools

    Tool to create cache object deformations to a file and reapply them. The tool is also able to interchange the caches with 3DS Max, Maya, Blender and Houdini

    Assassins Creed Lineage

    Just finish working on these series of short films for Assassins Creed 2.
    The game looks amazing as well!
    This production was done at Hybride and Ubisoft Digital Arts, my work consisted of making workflows/tools and leading the Technical Directors and pipeline people during the project at UDA.
    This was quite an experience and Im happy with the results, although I wish we had more than 5 months to produce the whole thing
    In my opinion (and not because I worked on it :P) this is the first adaptation of a game to a film that makes into the form a short film and doesnt let me down. It actually leaves that feeling that we could explore more of this universe.
    I would be looking forward to work on a full feature film for this brand, with a lot of time to produce it of course

    Mesher for the SPH

    There are at least 3 different meshers for ICE particles that can be used with the SPH:
    Pwrapper from 3daliens
    emPolygonizer
    And Guillaume Laforge is doing this pretty cool project that constructs a fast scalar field in ICE and passes to the polygonizer in a grid structure.
    The coolest stuff for me is that the distance function on Guillaumes polygonizer is an ICE compound! So you can play with it right there and manage to change the way the polygonizer will weight the surface.
    Its exciting to see all these people developing these tools and they are all compatible with my SPH solver, have fun!

    Visualize the graph of a function is not easy (at least for me), without plotting the function.
    It can be really hard to understand what y = x^2 * z^2 looks like.
    So I obviously did an ICE compound with these most common graphs.
    I couldnt stop doing functions and playing with it, so I ended up with this list, all in the same compound:

    Hopefully this will work as a educational resource, so you can see what these functions look when applied to a 3d shape and understand how Sin, Cos, Absolute values, etc, can affect the function.

    Whats even more cool in ICE is that after I had all the functions done, I could apply this as a force, a weightmap basically anything that reads a 3d vector or a scalar.

    Package of 6 animations done at Nervo.tv for Zune.
    My participation on this project started on RnD, and how we would make the simulation work on the cube shape, then how to animate it. I also did most of the lighting work and the final compositing/color grading.
    Few interesting things from this project:
    The Boxes animation was done simulating rigid bodies in XSI, and a lot of layered animation on top.
    The Liquids one I had to write a little script to allow me import a sequence of meshes, that came from a standard particle simulation. To then enable people to tweak it later, in a mesh state and apply relax operations etc.
    The Sweets one was very tricky too, each frame of the animation is a different object. Like a 3d stop motion technique.
    This project was fun and challenging at the same time, Im pretty happy how it turned out.

    ICE - Particle density

    Based on the number of neighboring particles, this compound can adjust the color around the boundaries of a particle cloud.
    The range is calculated based on the number of points in the island, so a gradient is smoothly blended to the particle color.
    This can be used in any region of the stack. Plug the Execute Color in one ICEtree port and you are good to go.
    However if you want the color to update with the simulation, you must use this in the simulation region.

    Like the grease pencil tool for Maya, this tool allows you to draw with the sketch tool for 2d animation/per frame annotation, directly in the XSI viewport.
    Changes V1.1

    • Assembled the XSI Bezier curve tool, CV Curve tool and Curve Text tool to be used from the TC_sketch PPG
    • Added the edit frames command, now you can move your frames in time, selecting a frame in the listbox and using the up and down buttons.
    • Added the code to work on linux system.
    • The current frame stays visible until the next frame.
    • The listbox now let you navigate/select frames to edit.
    • Default frame duration option in the setup tab was renamed to Last frame duration. So now it just affects the last frame of the animation.
    • Re worked the entire keyframing command

    Features V1.0

    • Drawing mode Auto-keyframing (selectability/visibility).
    • Curves color and Visibility/Selectability overrides.
    • Curve editing The nav slider in the Edit Frames group is useful to edit/add curves to existing frames. Change this slider will jump the XSI timeline to where the sketched curve is in time.
    • Auto-select curves option will automatically select all the curves for that given frame.
    • XSI Brush tool and View Proportional Transform Tool can be called from the TC_sketch PPG.
    • The Sketch tool creates a standard XSI curve, so you can use any XSI deformer tools on it.

    H2oh! is a flavored water type of thing that called for animated fishes inside of the aquarium.
    At Conspira&#227;o Filmes filmes I had the opportunity to work in the modeling, animation and was the lead texturer/shading artist.
    Our pipeline was based on Maya, Renderman and Photoshop.

    Low poly game model done as a test for the Amsterdam based game studio Guerrilla Games
    I did it using Maya, Zbrush|Mudbox and Photoshop.

    Batzal Ghost shader for Softimage.
    The new Batzal software Ghost shader for Mental Ray adds transparency to whole 3D objects or particle effects instead of adding transparency to their material surfaces.     KA_Slate.
