Use One Keyboard & Mouse For Two Computers

http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/1318.png

It’s your friendly neighborhood admin with a solution to a common computer problem around my house.

Chances are if you have one computer in your household you have more than one computer in your household. It’s just a fact. More and more homes have servers, media centers and multiple desktops/laptops.

Some people use KVM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KVM_switch)’s to control multiple machines. These KVM’s are a simple switch that lets you switch control to another physically connected machine. A for the server, B for the desktop and C for your media center. This is OK but not the best setup.

Let’s say I want to copy information from my desktop to my server. I can remote desktop (http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/remote-desktop/) in, use VNC (http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/vnc/), AAMMY (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/want-webex-like-control-over-a-remote-machine-for-free/) or any number of remote control programs. But what if I want to be able to view both machines at the same time? What if I want to use one keyboard and mouse for two computers.

If you have two or more machines in your home with monitors attached you can now control multiple computers from one single mouse and keyboard. It gets better because you can also share clipboards and wait, Input Director is FREE! (http://www.inputdirector.com/downloads.html).

http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/1319.png

Input Director’s Website breaks it down like this:

Before kicking off the installation and configuration of Input Director it’s important to first explain the master/slave terminology used throughout the documentation and application.

The master system is the computer that has the mouse/keyboard that you be using to control it and the other system(s). A slave system is one that can receive input (keyboard and mouse) from a master.

The quick start guide will run though setting up two computers, one as the master, the other as a slave. You need to decide now which computer you will use as the master - that is, which one has the keyboard/mouse that you want to use to control it and the other system (the slave).

For the remainder of the quick start guide, the two Windows systems that Input Director will be installed onto will be referred to as the master and the slave.

Got it?
Your main machine with the keyboard and mouse that you want to use will be called the MASTER and other machines that you will remote control are your SLAVES.

This application is installed on each computer and you are give a bunch of security options like what computers can control your slave and neat hotkeys to make switching machines a breeze. You can setup a situation similar to multiple monitors with remote machines. You can move your mouse off your screen and right onto the next machine (basically, have multiple computers on one monitor). Even if you have multiple monitors this will still work.

I have used other programs that claim to do what Input Director does - but hands down this is the easiest to make work. It is really easy and if this fits a need that you have I highly recommend it!
Let’s take a look at it.

http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/1320.png

You first run the setup on the master machine and simply set it as the master machine like seen here:

http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/1321.png

Then you setup the client machine. Come on back over to the Master machine and tell it where your Slave machine is.

http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/1322.png

You can now go and configure hotkeys and other goodies but that’s it. You are ready to manage multiple machines from one keyboard and mouse. Next step world domination!

You Can download the program form the attachment

Control multiple computers with a single keyboard and mouse (http://lifehacker.com/254648/hack-attack-control-multiple-computers-with-a-single-keyboard-and-mouse)

You don't need a hardware switch to share one keyboard and mouse amongst several different computers. All you need is the free, cross-platform application, Synergy (http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/). Synergy connects one keyboard and mouse to any computer on your network, making a dual- or triple-computer setup work more like a dual- or triple-monitor setup. Synergy even allows you to share clipboard data across your computers and operating systems.
Today I'll detail how to set up Synergy on your home network to control all of your desktops with one mouse and keyboard.

How it works

Synergy uses one computer as a server - that's the computer that will be sharing its keyboard and mouse. The rest of your computers - the ones you want to control - will need to be set up as Synergy clients.

The great part about Synergy is that you can customize the program to work with the layout of your computers. For example, if you've got your MacBook running to the left of your Windows PC, you can set up Synergy so that moving your mouse to the left of your Windows monitor will seamlessly jump your mouse across virtual space where it lands safely on your Mac. Whichever desktop currently holds your mouse is also the desktop to which your keyboard's keystrokes will be sent.

Make sense? Add to that Synergy's clipboard sharing and you've got one helluva convergence app.

What you'll need:

If you'll be running one or more Windows PC's in your setup, download and install the Synergy Installer (https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=59275&release_id=406637) for Windows on each PC. (On the SourceForge page I've linked to, the current version is labeled SynergyInstaller-1.3.1.exe.)

If you want to run one or more Macs on your setup, download and install SynergyKM (http://software.landryhetu.com/synergy/) on each Mac you want to use.

Finally if you're running Linux, grab the platform independent version (https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=59275&release_id=406637).
The Windows and Mac downloads for Synergy both offer nice and simple GUIs for setting up Synergy, and we'll focus on those here. The *nix version of Synergy requires editing a configuration file and running from the command line. I won't cover that here, but this guide (http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/running.html) should help.

Set up your Synergy server

First, I'll walk through how to set up a Synergy server on a Windows computer:

On the other hand, if you're using a Mac for your server, here's how to set it up:

Set up a Synergy server on Mac

Set up your Synergy clients

This is the really easy part, assuming you've already added the client name to your Synergy server (Windows (http://www.lifehacker.com/photogallery/Set-up-Synergy-on-Windows/1760429) | Mac (http://www.lifehacker.com/photogallery/Set-up-Synergy-on-Mac/1760534)). All you have to do is run Synergy, then enter the name of your server. On a PC, it'll look like this:

http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/1335.png

On a Mac, it looks like this:

http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/1336.png

Most importantly, just be sure you have the name of the server correctly entered. If you're sure the server name is correct but you're still having trouble getting Synergy to work, you can opt instead to enter the server's local IP address, which you can get on a Windows PC by opening your command prompt and typing ipconfig.

http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/1337.png

On your Mac, the easiest way to find your local IP address is by running the Network Utility app and checking on the info tab.

In case you needed to jump back to this point to set up your clients before you finished your server set up, Mac users can get back to their server set up here (http://lifehacker.com/photogallery/set-up-synergy-on-mac/1760550), and Windows users can finish up here (http://lifehacker.com/photogallery/set-up-synergy-on-windows/1760344).

And that's that. Whether you're working on multiple platforms or you've got more than one computer you like using at a time, Synergy provides an excellent way to control all of the computers at your desktop from the comfort of one keyboard and mouse.

NOTE: Every now and then you may notice that Synergy's clipboard data isn't transferring between your desktops. Normally restarting the server remedies this for me. Also, if this seems familiar, it's because lifehacker extraordinaire Matt Haughey covered this territory (http://lifehacker.com/software/productivity/how-to-turn-your-dualmonitor-pc-into-a-dual-macpc-system-106123.php) a couple of years back.
