The Quick Answer
MX records represent the mailing address for your domain's email.
Point your domain's MX records to Google and the messages will follow.
Overview Step 1 (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=48238) Step 2 (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=48240) Step 3 (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=48241) Step 4 (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=48242) Step 5 (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=48243)
Overview: Five Steps to Fail Proof Switching
Switching to a new email service can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Our instructions on switching email to Google Apps will walk you through all the major and minor steps so that you can test our email service before modifying your MX records. You can even test our service with a subset of your users, and let them explore all the features.
Since the email addresses at your domain won't change, this guide helps you transfer accounts seamlessly - without disrupting your users.
http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/375.pngTo switch email right away, use our Quick Switch (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=51034) instructions. You can always return to this 5-step Email Switch Guide if you need more help.
Once you've switched your email service to Google Apps, make sure to notify your users of the new login page (http://mail.google.com/a/your_domain.com), and instructions for importing their Contacts lists (https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78225).
Want someone to do this for you? Get professional help with setup (http://www.google.com/enterprise/gallery/apps/smallbiz_services.html).
Step 1: Enable the login page for your mail accounts & verify ownership of your domain
Here's how to turn on the login page for your domain's mail accounts, and verify that you own the domain associated with your Google Apps account.
Log in to the control panel with your admin account (https://www.google.com/a/your_domain.com).
Click Add more services, if email is not already listed in the Dashboard view.
Click Add it now next to email. You'll be directed to the How to activate email page.
Click Verify domain ownership.
Follow the instructions to upload an HTML file to your website or create a CNAME record.
When you've completed the instructions for uploading an HTML file or creating a CNAME record, click Verify. It may take up to 48 hours to complete.
Quick tip: If you're showing that you own the domain by creating a CNAME record, you can perform a free CNAME lookup to make sure you've modified your DNS settings properly. Here's how:
Visit Google.com.
Search for CNAME lookup.
Select a search result from the list.
Type your full CNAME record address in to the field.
Select CNAME record if it's not the default search query.
Click Submit, or Lookup.
Example result (showing that the subdomain of googleffffffffc20b69f9.theurbanexperience.org is pointing to google.com): DNS Lookup (CNAME) for googleffffffffc20b69f9.theurbanexperience.org. Items Returned: 1
google.com
Step 2: Create user accounts
To create user accounts individually:
Click Create new users on the left side of your control panel.
Enter the first name, last name, and username.
You can set a password of your choosing by clicking Set password.
Click Create new user. You have the option to email or print the account information for the user.
Repeat these steps for each user at your domain.
To create many user accounts at once:
Click Advanced tools.
Follow the bulk update instructions to upload a .csv file. It's important that you create a new user account for all existing users. For example, if brad@mydomain.com is one of your current users, be sure to create the same username with Google Apps.
Step 3: Test mail accounts
To test your mail accounts in Google Apps, you'll need to access your current personal or work email account (unrelated to Google Apps), your new email account with Google Apps, and a separate email account.
http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/376.png
In the control panel, click User accounts from your Dashboard view.
Click your name (or the name of an account you'd like to test.) Make a note of the Temporary email address listed below the username.
http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/377.png
Log in to your current personal or work email account (unrelated to Google Apps) and set up auto-forwarding to the temp address with Google Apps. (ex. danielle@thatsthewhip.com.test-google-a.com) Yes, we know it's an ugly address, but it's only temporary.
Log in to your Google Apps mail account at (http://mail.google.com/a/your_domain.com).
Send a message to a separate email account that you can check. (Don't choose an email account that is automatically forwarding to your domain).
Note: If you see Can't send mail yet when you click Compose, we haven't finished verifying ownership of your domain. It can take up to 48 hours.
Access the separate email account that you sent a message to and reply back to your current personal or work email account.
Check the inbox of your Google Apps Email account for the message. It should arrive to your temporary address via forwarding from your current mail provider.
Please note that these are the only test options supported by Google.
Step 4: Modify MX records with your domain host
Select your domain host from our MX record list (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=33352) to view instructions tailored for your DNS console. If your domain host is not listed, please use the general instructions provided below.
If you have difficulty adding the MX records that we provide, please contact your domain host for assistance. We provide MX record instructions, when possible, but you'll need to contact your domain host if you aren't able to enter the information that we provide.
General instructions for modifying MX records with any domain host
Log in to your account with your domain host. (Who is my domain host? (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=48323))
Navigate to the MX record maintenance page.
MX records may be located in DNS Management, Mail Server Configuration, or Name Server Management. It's possible that you will have to enable advanced settings to edit your MX records.
Delete existing MX records (this is will discontinue current email service).
Use the information in the following table when you enter each MX record.
- You may not be able to enter the priority value exactly as it appears in the table below -- if you can't, make sure each record follows the indicated order (instead of 1, 5, 10, you can use 10, 20, 30, etc.).
- If you aren't able to assign priorities, you should only enter aspmx.l.google.com.
- Set any TTL values to the maximum allowed.
- If you can't enter all five records, enter as many as you can.
- MX records often require a trailing dot (.) at the end (for example, aspmx.l.google.com.). Priority

Step 5: Final test
To perform the final test for your mail account, you need to access your Google Apps email account, your former email account for your domain, and a separate email account.
http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/378.png
Log in to your Google Apps mail account (http://mail.google.com/a/your_domain.com).
Compose a message to a separate email account that you can check, and click 'Send.' (Don't choose an email account that is automatically forwarding to your domain).
Log in to the separate email account.
Open the message from your domain, and reply.
Check the inbox of your Google Apps mail account for the message.
Check the inbox of your former email account for your domain. The message shouldn't appear in your inbox.
If you're able to send and receive with your new email account, you've succesfully switched your domain's email accounts to Google Apps!
Configuring Your MX Records
http://www.atyafonline.com/vb/imgcache/374.png (https://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=33352&print=1) Print (https://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=33352&print=1)
To use Google Apps as your domain's email service, you'll need to modify your MX records (<A href="http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=48090#J">What are MX records?) to point to Google's mail servers. You must change your domain's MX records with your domain host. Each domain host has slightly different instructions to change MX records. List of Domain Host Instructions (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=87084)
If you purchased your domain name from one of Google's registration partners while signing up for Google Apps, you shouldn't use these instructions. Instead, you can activate email in the control panel and Google will automatically configure your MX records.
If you are currently using email addresses at your domain, you should create user accounts in the control panel for each address before changing your MX records. Otherwise, email sent to those addresses may bounce.
General Instructions
Log in to your hosting account, and go to the MX record maintenance page.
MX records may be located in DNS Management, Mail Server Configuration, or Name Server Management. It's possible that you will have to enable advanced settings to edit your MX records.
Delete all existing MX entries.
Enter the following MX records.
You may not be able to enter the priority value exactly as it appears in the table below -- if you can't, make sure each record follows the indicated order. If you aren't able to assign priorities, you should only enter aspmx.l.google.com.. Set any TTL values to the maximum allowed.

Changing Mail Exchange (MX) records
Mail Exchange (MX) records control how incoming email is routed for your domain. Before Google can host your email, you'll need to change these MX records to point to our servers.
If your domain already has email addresses, please be careful changing MX records. To avoid disruption in email service, be sure to create the same set of user accounts with the control panel before changing your MX records Learn more (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=45679&hl=en)

Sign in to your domain hosting company's website using the username and password associated with your domain.
Navigate to an MX record maintenance page. MX records are special DNS (Domain Name Service) records, and are often located under sections titled "DNS Management," "Mail Server Configuration," or "Name Server Management." You may need to turn on advanced settings to allow editing of these MX records.
Delete any existing MX records before entering new MX records.
For each MX record, enter information according to the entries in the following table.
You may not be allowed to enter the priority values exactly as they appear in the table below; in that case, simply ensure that the server addresses are prioritized in the same order as they appear in the table. (i.e. The priority ranking [1, 3, 3, 5, 5, 5, 5] should work just as well as [1, 5, 5, 10, 10, 10, 10] so long as you keep the addresses in the right order.)
If you're asked to specify the type of each record you're adding, enter "MX".
MX records often require the specific format of DNS records, including a trailing dot (".") at the end of any full-qualified domain names (e.g. "server.example.com.")

Priority
